Sandblasting

Commercial sandblasting is a highly effective surface preparation technique used in various industries to remove contaminants, rust, old coatings, and other imperfections from metal surfaces. It involves the use of compressed air and abrasive media, such as sand, grit, or shot, to propel particles at high velocity onto the surface, resulting in thorough cleaning and preparation.

What are the benefits of sand blasting?

Benefits of commercial sandblasting include:

Effective Surface Preparation: Sandblasting efficiently removes old coatings, rust, scale, and other contaminants from metal surfaces, providing a clean and receptive surface for subsequent treatments, such as painting or powder coating.

Versatility: Sandblasting can be applied to various metal surfaces, including steel, aluminum, cast iron, and more. It is suitable for different shapes, sizes, and complex structures, making it a versatile method for surface preparation.

Enhanced Adhesion: By removing existing coatings and contaminants, sandblasting promotes optimal adhesion of subsequent coatings, ensuring better durability and longevity.

Time and Cost Savings: Sandblasting is a time-efficient process compared to manual methods of surface preparation. It can rapidly remove coatings and surface imperfections, reducing labor costs and project turnaround time.

Eco-Friendly: Sandblasting is an environmentally friendly method as it does not involve the use of harsh chemicals or solvents. Proper containment and waste disposal measures can be implemented to minimise environmental impact.

What is the process of sand blasting?

The process of commercial sandblasting typically consists of the following steps:

Surface Preparation: The metal surface is thoroughly cleaned to remove any loose debris or contaminants. This step ensures that the sandblasting process can effectively remove the target material without interference.

Abrasive Propulsion: The chosen abrasive media, such as sand or grit, is mixed with compressed air and propelled through a specialised blasting nozzle. The high-pressure stream of abrasive particles strikes the surface, removing unwanted coatings, rust, or other surface imperfections.

Containment and Safety Measures: To ensure safety and minimise environmental impact, sandblasting is typically conducted within an enclosed space or a designated blast booth. Proper ventilation systems and personal protective equipment (PPE) are employed to protect operators from dust inhalation and to contain the abrasive media.

Surface Inspection: Once the sandblasting process is complete, the surface is inspected to ensure that all contaminants and coatings have been effectively removed. Any remaining debris or imperfections are addressed before proceeding to the next steps of the surface treatment process.

The duration of commercial sandblasting can vary depending on factors such as the size and condition of the surface being treated, the type of abrasive media used, and the desired level of cleaning or preparation. Typically, the process can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours, depending on the complexity of the project.

We can sandblast products up to 6m in length. For delicate smaller parts we fine blast prior to powder coating for better adhesivity.
